Las Vegas Must-Visit Spots

Las Vegas

There are a lot of things to do in Vegas, but some people want to get away from it all. With just a short drive, tourists can float down a river, see some breathtaking scenery, and see an Old West town. Here are some spots in Las Vegas that can't be missed.

Laughlin, Nevada: It's about 95 miles outside Vegas and situated on the Colorado River. It's home to a few casinos, where visitors can gamble, eat and play at a slower pace. There are plenty of other things to do in Laughlin, such as water sports and boating; there's a scenic river cruise and a free train ride offered by the Tropicana Express.

The Hoover Dam: It's one of the engineering wonders of the world, and it's located on Hwy. 93 about thirty miles southeast of Las Vegas. There's a self-guided tour available for $8 per person, and a guided power plant tour for $11. The Dam Tour offers a guided look at the more obscure areas of the dam, such as inspection points, tunnels and generators. This tour costs $30 and guests must be 8 years old or older.

Bonnie Springs Ranch: it offers a look back into the Old West as it happened in a mining town. It's just 25 miles from Vegas; visitors can take in a Wild West show or peruse the wax museum. There are cowboys and saloon girls in the streets, and mock gunfights every day. Younger kids will adore the petting zoo and families can sit down to a home-cooked meal. The ranch is open from 10:30 am to 6 pm during the summer.

Lake Mead: it's by the Hoover Dam just outside of Vegas. Visitors can fish, boat, kayak and water ski here, or they can mountain bike or hike along one of the many great trails. The Park Service offers guided hikes during the fall and winter months. To really relax, take a lake cruise; they are offered year-round for a great price.

Grand Canyon: it's well worth a day trip and there are several companies in Vegas offering tours. Most include hotel pickup, a canyon tour and a free lunch. There are also air tours available via plane or helicopter. Some of these tours fill up fast, so make reservations well in advance.

There are a lot of exciting things to do in Las Vegas that have nothing to do with the casino. Whether you stay in Las Vegas city or take a day trip, there's sure to be something that will please you and everyone in your party.
