From its magnificent views to its cozy cafés, there is a lot to do in San Francisco. The city is known for the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf, but there is so much more to see. This is a guide to some of the city's top tourist highlights.
The cable cars- they may not be the fastest way around the city, but they are definitely the most picturesque. They go up and down the steep inclines through Union Square and Pier 39, and they allow tourists to see the sights and offer a look back into history at the same time.
Museums and culture- the city is known for its ballet and opera offerings, but there are many museums to see in San Francisco as well. The M.H. De Young Museum offers visual arts, and the Palace of Fine Arts' Exploratorium offers budding scientists over 650 interactive exhibits.
Aquariums and Zoos- the San Francisco zoo is a must-see. It has over two hundred species spread over 100+ acres. The numerous aquaria offer tourists a chance to see the local aquatic life, as well as seals and penguins.
Shopping- it is still one of the best reasons for a visit to San Francisco. Union Square is home to shops that sell jewelry, clothing and many other items. The city is also known for its clubbing and dining- stalwarts like Morton's Steakhouse and the Farmer's Market offer something for everyone.
The Haight-Ashbury District- it offers a look back into the not-so-distant past. It was home to Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead, and it pays homage to its hippie roots. Tie-dyed clothing is sold right alongside the area's many Victorian houses.
A trip to San Francisco is simply great. You may not leave your heart there, but when you leave, you will undoubtedly carry a little bit of the city with you.
